The USS Cairo, a Federal gunboat, employed in the capture of Vicksburg and securing the Mississippi River for Union control. The Cairo is the first warship sunk by a torpedo (modern-day mine). The blast tore a hole in the port bow as can be seen above. The gunboat is on display at Vicksburg National Military Park.
